- NOAA Fisheries published a Sept. 28 final rule implementing the Pacific Fishery Management Council’s rebuilding plan for overfished Queets River natural spring/summer Chinook. The rule is effective Oct. 28, 2026.
- Laws & LicensingNews deskNOAA closed the Atlantic bluefin tuna General category commercial fishery Sept. 24 after the September subquota was reached. The category reopens Oct. 1 at one large medium or giant bluefin per vessel, and restricted-fishing days resume.
- MDMR’s director order opens the 2026–2027 public oyster season at legal sunrise Oct. 1 in Area I B, Area II B, Area II E, and Area V A, if opening criteria are met. Sundays stay closed.

- Proclamation M-20-2026 opens Management Units B (subunits), C, D1 (Northern), D2, and E to 4-inch through 6½-inch stretch gill nets effective 5:54 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 29, under Southern Flounder Amendment 4 and the federal ITP.
- From Oct. 1 through Nov. 1, the Stillaguamish mainstem from Marine Drive to the forks, including South Slough, returns to pamphlet rules. The North Fork from the mouth to the Highway 530 bridge at Cicero remains closed.
- Portions of the Skagit and Cascade open for coho Oct. 1–31. The Cascade is four coho, no bait, single barbless hooks, and closed Sunday through Tuesday. The Skagit from Gilligan Creek to the Baker River closes Oct. 5–7 and Oct. 13–17 for tribal fisheries.
- TPWD’s drawing for one alligator gar over 48 inches on the Trinity, from the I-30 bridge in Dallas to I-10 in Chambers County, takes applications through Sept. 30. The department is offering 150 authorizations. Winners are notified by Oct. 15.
- LDH, LDEQ, and LDWF issued two new mercury fish-consumption advisories on Sept. 24 — Mermentau River and Lake Arthur, and Vermilion River and Bayou Tortue — and updated five others. The state now lists 52 freshwater mercury advisories.
- A joint Oregon–Washington hearing on Sept. 23 opened Chinook retention Sept. 26–27 from Buoy 10 to the Highway 395 bridge at Pasco, and unmarked coho from the west Puget Island line to Pasco from Sept. 26 through Oct. 15.
- Minnesota DNR is still taking comments through Sept. 30 on 2027 experimental and special rules, including a sunfish toolbox limit, pike changes at Cuyuna and Pine Lake, and making the Namakan walleye slot a special regulation.
- WDFW will keep the Snohomish closed above the railroad bridge at the Lincoln Avenue launch from Sept. 26 through Nov. 1 so a smaller fishery downstream can still be monitored.
- WDFW closed the Deschutes River in Thurston County, from 400 feet below the lower Tumwater Falls ladder to the Old Highway 99 bridge, from Sept. 22 through Oct. 31. This is not Oregon’s Deschutes.
- WDFW reopened salmon fishing on Lake Washington and the lower Sammamish after Ballard Locks coho counts improved, returning those waters to permanent rules immediately through Oct. 31.
- DMR’s Sept. 23 update keeps the Sept. 19 shellfish closures on all of Maquoit Bay and the east side of Middle Bay. The bloom is not a human-health threat; inner Casco is easing while western Penobscot Bay is building.
- Utah’s Wildlife Board approved the 2027–28 fishing package: zero harvest on 14 native fishes, tighter community-pond bass rules, and new walleye slots at Starvation and Willard Bay.
- FWC added eight harvest days so Gulf private-recreational red snapper stays open continuously Oct. 9–22, lining up with Florida’s Atlantic EFP window.
- GADNR Coastal Resources Division opened comment through Oct. 30 on a new recreational Reef/Migratory Fish Endorsement ($10 residents / $20 nonresidents in 2027) covering nine offshore species, with mandatory trip reporting planned for 2028.
- Effective Sept. 23, Colorado Parks and Wildlife reopened the Eagle and Crystal rivers after cooler water and monsoon rain. Elk and Yampa voluntary closures stay; a mandatory Stagecoach reach on the Yampa remains closed.
- Starting Sept. 23, Hanford Reach anglers have to release wild adult Chinook. The daily limit stays six salmon with no more than one adult, through Dec. 31 below the Old Hanford powerline crossing and through Oct. 15 above it.
- Georgia’s exempted fishing permit opens recreational red snapper in South Atlantic federal waters Oct. 9–22, with a 4,859-fish cap, one fish per person, trips that start and end in Georgia, and VESL trip reports.
- ODFW tightened Snake River bags from the Oregon–Washington line up to 400 feet below Hells Canyon Dam starting Sept. 23: hatchery Chinook only, three adult hatchery kings through Oct. 31, and two hatchery steelhead through Dec. 31.
- Montana FWP lifted the Big Hole River Section 5 angling closure on Sept. 22 after weekend rain improved flows. Section 1 stays closed, and the Dickie Bridge-to-Jefferson spawning closure starts Oct. 1.

- A Sept. 11 Federal Register temporary rule moves 250,000 pounds of 2026 commercial Atlantic bluefish quota from New Jersey to North Carolina, effective Sept. 10 through Dec. 31.
- FWC set the 2026 recreational Atlantic red snapper season for Oct. 9–22 in state and federal waters. Bag is one fish, no minimum size, under a federal exempted fishing permit, with a trip declaration required.
- ODFW closed fall Chinook from the Hwy 730 bridge up to Threemile Dam on the Umatilla from Sept. 22 through Nov. 30, 2026, after in-season forecasts dropped below the 1,458 preseason adult return to protect hatchery broodstock.
- PFBC is fully drawing down 73-acre Ford’s Lake in Lackawanna County and 389-acre Rose Valley Lake in Lycoming County ahead of dam work. These are separate waters from the Lackawanna State Park lake drawdown.
- ODNR has asked the Ohio Wildlife Council to drop many site-specific bass length and bag rules for a statewide daily limit of five bass and a 12-inch minimum. Comments run through Sept. 30; the council votes Oct. 28.
- Effective Monday, Sept. 21, WDFW cut the recreational salmon daily limit to one in Marine Area 8-2 (except Tulalip Terminal, through Sept. 25) and Marine Area 9 (through Sept. 30). Release Chinook and chum; no minimum size.
- Saturday, Sept. 26 is New York’s National Hunting and Fishing Day free-fishing waiver: no freshwater license needed for residents or nonresidents. Seasons, size, bag, and permit rules still apply; anglers 16 and older need a license any other day.
- NMFS reopened non-mark-selective coho retention from Cape Falcon to Humbug Mountain for two days only — Sunday, Sept. 20 and Saturday, Sept. 26 — after managers counted 4,761 fish still on the 25,700 quota.
- Saturday, Sept. 26, is Georgia’s National Hunting and Fishing Day free-fishing waiver: residents need no fishing or trout license on public waters. WRD is hosting 12 events statewide; size, bag, and method rules still apply.
- Laws & LicensingNews deskA Sept. 17, 2026 executive order, Restoring American Saltwater Angling and Recreation, tells NOAA to modernize recreational catch data, consider substituting state numbers for high-error MRIP estimates, and stand up reef-in-place and shark/pinniped depredation work. It is not a bag-limit change.
- CPW authorized a public fish salvage at Hugo Ponds SWA beginning Sept. 1 under Regulation 104.G ahead of pond draining for habitat work. Size and bag limits are suspended there until the salvage is lifted; a license is still required.
- TPWD’s Sept. 14 release: a red tide bloom reported off Galveston since Sept. 8 is being sampled from Crystal Beach to Bolivar Roads and along southern Galveston Island. Cells are moderate to high; the kill is mostly Gulf menhaden and striped mullet.
- A Sept. 11, 2026 CDFW director declaration under Fish and Game Code 5523 bars commercial and recreational take of northern anchovy for human consumption from south of Pigeon Point to a line due west of Point Lobos after OEHHA and CDPH found elevated domoic acid.
- Laws & LicensingNews deskNOAA Fisheries published recalibrated recreational effort and catch estimates back to 1981 under an improved Fishing Effort Survey. The new numbers are systematically lower. Catch limits and seasons do not change until stock assessments use the data, starting late 2026.
- WDFW shut the Satsop from the mouth to Bingham Creek Hatchery dam, including CRC 329A, Sept. 16–30 after enforcement saw anglers targeting salmon before the Oct. 1 opener. Low flows made Chinook more vulnerable; the close preserves October coho impacts.
- Laws & LicensingNews deskThe U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s 2026–27 station-specific final rule opens or expands hunting and sport fishing at 111 field stations (107 refuges and 4 hatcheries) across 32 states — about 1,488 opportunities, including first-time access at 14 refuges and 3 hatcheries. It also rescinds delayed non-lead ammo/tackle rules that were set for Sept. 1 at nine refuges.
- Laws & LicensingNews deskA Sept. 3 Federal Register correction restores the omitted “all salmon except coho, two salmon per day” bag limit for the Monterey recreational ocean salmon area and clarifies San Francisco-area wording.
- CDFW’s Sept. 1 ocean-regs update: white sturgeon are closed July 1–Sept. 30, 2026. Green sturgeon may not be taken or lifted from the water at any time.
- The 83,000-Chinook summer harvest limit is in. Commercial ocean salmon is closed. San Francisco recreational spring/summer ended Aug. 23.
