Cape Falcon–Humbug: coho retention back for Sept. 20 and Sept. 26
NMFS, working with Oregon, the Pacific Fishery Management Council, and fishery representatives on a Sept. 17 conference call, put non-mark-selective coho back on the recreational bag from Cape Falcon to Humbug Mountain for two days only. NOAA posted the change Friday as Inseason Action #31.
Sunday, Sept. 20, from 12:01 a.m. through 11:59 p.m., coho retention is allowed. The daily bag is two salmon, and there is no fin-clip requirement. Monday, Sept. 21, through Friday, Sept. 25, the stretch stays open for all salmon except coho, still two a day.
Saturday, Sept. 26, is the second coho day — again 12:01 a.m. to 11:59 p.m., two salmon, no fin clip. From Sunday, Sept. 27, through Oct. 31 the fishery returns to all salmon except coho, two-salmon bag. Chinook must be at least 24 inches total length throughout.
The non-mark-selective coho opener started Sept. 1 on a 25,700-fish quota and closed at the end of Sept. 12 when managers forecast the quota would be met. Estimated catch is now 20,939 coho, about 81.5 percent of the ceiling, leaving roughly 4,761 fish — enough, they said, for two retention days. A follow-up call is set for Wednesday, Sept. 23, after the first opener; managers may cancel or move the Sept. 26 day if remaining quota, effort, or weather say so. Confirm the live ODFW ocean salmon page before you leave the dock.
