New York fishing
News-desk briefs whose primary water is New York.
- New York DEC is holding closed the quarter-mile lower fly stretch of the Salmon River from the Route 52 bridge in Altmar to the hatchery boundary until enough salmon eggs are collected. About 16 miles below Route 52 and the upper fly water remain open.
- Saturday, Sept. 26 is New York’s National Hunting and Fishing Day free-fishing waiver: no freshwater license needed for residents or nonresidents. Seasons, size, bag, and permit rules still apply; anglers 16 and older need a license any other day.
- New York DEC will not open the Salmon River’s lower fly section on Sept. 15. The quarter-mile stretch from the Route 52 bridge in Altmar up to the hatchery boundary stays closed until enough Chinook eggs are taken; water below Route 52 and the upper fly area remain open.
- On The Water’s Sept. 10 upstate New York report says staging Lake Ontario Chinook are still chewing, while a cancelled Labor Day whitewater release kept the Salmon River low and spread early kings through the system.
