Rogue and South Coast winter steelhead validation and wild harvest tags go on sale Nov. 1

Laws & LicensingOregon

Winter steelhead anglers headed to the Rogue Basin or Oregon's South Coast could start buying the Rogue-South Coast Steelhead validation and the wild steelhead harvest tag on Nov. 1, the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) announced Oct. 30.

The validation is required for all winter steelhead anglers fishing those areas from Dec. 1 through April 30, 2027. Anyone who wants to keep a wild winter steelhead also needs the separate harvest tag. To find the products in ODFW's Electronic Licensing System, buyers have to switch the purchase year to 2027. To keep using the validation and tag after Jan. 1, anglers also need a 2027 angling license, combination license or Sports Pac.

Daily and multi-day license holders must have an ODFW ID number to buy a validation, so ODFW says not to use guest checkout, and pre-paid daily licenses don't qualify. Wild harvest rules vary by water, and some spots don't open to wild winter steelhead until after Dec. 1, so ODFW advises checking the regulations or calling its Gold Beach (541-247-7605) or Central Point (541-826-8774) offices.

The requirements started in January 2023 under the 2021 Rogue-South Coast Multi-Species Conservation and Management Plan. Sales help pay for winter steelhead monitoring in the two regions.
