Shasta River Chinook count slows to 3,501 adults through Oct. 8
The fall Chinook push on the Shasta River slowed in early October. Siskiyou News, citing the California Department of Fish and Wildlife’s Oct. 12 in-season update, puts net upstream passage at the Shasta River counting facility at 3,501 adult Chinook through Oct. 8. That is a gain of 309 fish over the previous week, down from a gain of 1,172.
The same recap says counting stations on the upper Klamath tributaries have begun logging their first meaningful numbers, while the Shasta surge itself has flattened. The published story cuts off before it lists those other stations, so this desk is not assigning tributary counts from that update.
These are in-season passage numbers from the Oct. 12 sheet, not a final escapement estimate. CDFW’s next update is the one that will show whether the Shasta weekly gain stays this small and what the upper tributaries actually add.
This is a The Gillnet news desk summary, not a reprint.
