Alabama opens a limited Mobile Bay oyster harvest Nov. 2

The Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources says a limited oyster harvest will open Monday, Nov. 2, in three areas of Mobile Bay: the Cedar Point East, Cedar Point West and Heron Bay grids. Harvest is allowed Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. The department will close the season based on daily reporting at the Oyster Management Station, and it notes that oyster populations remain low.
Commercial harvesters need a commercial license and may take 8 sacks per person per vessel per day. Recreational harvesters may take 100 legal oysters, at least 3 inches long, per day and must get a recreational tag at the station. Only tongs and hand harvest are allowed.
The Oyster Management Station is at 16871 Dauphin Island Parkway in Coden, across from Jemison's Bait and Tackle, and is open 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
