Wyoming’s annual Green River closure below Fontenelle Dam runs Oct. 1–Dec. 31

The short stretch of the Green River under Fontenelle Dam is closed to fishing from Oct. 1 through Dec. 31. Wyoming Game and Fish’s Green River notice — the same Sept. 10 post that lifted the voluntary heat closure — prints the annual spawn rules in a separate section. The closed water runs from Fontenelle Dam downstream about one mile to the U.S. Geological Survey gauge, the cable crossing at Weeping Rocks campground. The department says the closure protects fall-spawning fish, including brown trout, which sustain themselves in the Green.

That is not the Sept. 10 voluntary catch-and-release lift between Fontenelle Reservoir and Flaming Gorge already on this desk. The heat advisory came off. The spawn closure is the standing fall rule, and it is in effect now.

Two Flaming Gorge rules sit in the same section. From Sept. 10 through Nov. 30, anglers must release all kokanee immediately. Green River Region fisheries supervisor John Walrath said it is not illegal to fish for kokanee in the fall, but angling can kill spawners before they reproduce. From Oct. 15 through Dec. 12, Linwood Bay at Lucerne Point is closed to nighttime angling, sunset to sunrise. Game and Fish says that night closure is mandated by the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources to protect spawning trophy lake trout, discourage illegal snagging, and keep boaters safer. Questions on the Green River rules go to the Green River regional office at 307-875-3223. Linwood Bay questions go to Utah’s Vernal office at 435-781-9453.
