Nueces County’s free Packery Channel fishing pier is nearly ready
Nueces County’s new fishing pier at Packery Channel Nature Park is nearly finished. KRIS 6’s Jacob Daniels reports the pier reaches into the water at the park, and once it opens anglers will not need a boat or an entry fee. The county says the structure should be ready soon. The story does not give an opening day.
The pier is part of a roughly $7 million project that also extended the nature park boardwalk. KRIS 6 says the work was paid with a Texas General Land Office grant, not local tax dollars.
Anglers in the piece are already watching the fall redfish run. Martin Warren, fishing near the channel, said the pier should spread people out; he described the bank as shoulder to shoulder. Marcus Lira, a bank fisherman who usually fishes near the causeway, said reds are running and that a channel is a useful alternative when the surf is rough or loaded with seaweed and current. Both plan to use the pier when it opens.
