Nevada’s Oct. 8 sheet: Cave Lake’s 5,054 rainbows, Comins at 60 degrees, Jiggs dry
Eastern Nevada’s Oct. 8 reports are a cool trout lake, a quality mixed fishery, and one reservoir that is empty. Nevada Department of Wildlife’s Cave Lake report dated Oct. 8, 2026, puts the water at about 62 degrees. Fall stocking has started. The stocking table lists 5,054 rainbow trout averaging 7.7 inches on Sept. 30, and a year-to-date total of 26,443 rainbows. The report says that plant is half the allotment. Anglers should expect 8- to 11-inch rainbows, an occasional 9-inch brown, and a few browns over 20 inches that carried over from the dam drawdown. Browns will move toward Cave Creek as they spawn.
Comins Lake, same date, is about 60 degrees. Recent surveys found many 16- to 18-inch rainbows, good numbers of 15-inch browns, 12- to 14-inch tiger trout, and multiple 24-inch rainbows over 5 pounds. The spring table on that page lists 7,061 browns on May 5, 5,292 rainbows on May 6, 2,498 tigers on May 19, and 3,410 rainbows on May 25. Largemouth are expected in the 11- to 13-inch range, and pike angling has produced fish of 5 to 10 pounds. NDOW asks anglers to release bluegill there.
Illipah Reservoir is about 64 degrees and roughly 40 percent full. Irrigation has stopped. The report says the lake received its full spring allotment of 5,584 rainbows averaging 8.9 inches, and anglers can expect 9- to 12-inch rainbows plus an occasional brown. Jiggs Reservoir, also known as Zunino, is a different story: most remaining fish were salvaged and hauled to South Fork Reservoir in late summer, and the Oct. 8 report says Jiggs is currently dry.
