New Mexico Oct. 8 Fishing Line: an albino catfish and closed Heron ramps

US FishingNew Mexico

Seth Hardy released six brown trout on the Rio Grande below Taos Junction Bridge, including an 18-inch fish on a fly rod, in the catches carried by the New Mexico Department of Wildlife “Fishing Line” in the Albuquerque Journal on Oct. 8. Mike Pino and Check Estrada of Albuquerque limited on rainbows at Hopewell Lake with flies and nightcrawlers. Before dawn at Bill Evans Lake, Eric Kennburg caught an albino catfish on cutbait.

Low water is pinching boat access. Heron Lake’s ramps are closed. El Vado Lake’s boating access is limited, and a ramp closure there is close. At Elephant Butte, the Marina del Sur ramp is open again; boaters should watch for debris and shallows. The Rio Grande below Elephant Butte was at 0 cubic feet per second.

Harmful-algal-bloom warnings are posted at Charette Lake, Clayton Lake, Bluewater Lake, and on the Rio Grande from John Dunn Bridge through Orilla Verde. Quemado Lake is under a danger advisory. Pecos trout were fair to good on Pat’s Rubber Legs. Flooding is expected to hurt fishing on the Rio Ruidoso for an extended stretch. Anglers can file reports through the iFish form at wildlife.dgf.nm.gov/fishing/weekly-report. Bear Canyon’s weekday closure, already reported separately, is still in effect.
