Sebago Lake flips to artificial lures Oct. 1; salmon must be released

Laws & LicensingMaine

Sebago Lake’s October rules are the lead. Bangor Daily News outdoors contributor Tom Roth, writing Sept. 23, 2026, says that as of Oct. 1 the lake goes to artificial lures only, to protect pre-spawn fish. Salmon must be released immediately. Anglers may still harvest lake trout.

The same column is a late-September fishing note, not a new regulation beyond that Oct. 1 switch. Roth writes that cool nights, wind, and rain dropped the water temperature and improved the bite: more lake trout, and some large salmon. For the past four weeks he had been finding pin smelt — young rainbow smelt — in the mouths and stomachs of lake trout and salmon. Guides he names, including himself, reported shorter waits between strikes than in midsummer. He says good fishing continues into October as the lake cools further.

Confirm the live Maine inland rules, including any special Sebago language, before you keep a lake trout or fish with bait. This October artificial-lure rule is a lake-specific note, separate from the statewide general-law season dates.
