Louisiana private red snapper landings finish at 934,367 pounds

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries has a final estimate for the 2026 private recreational red snapper season. The Times of Houma/Thibodaux reported Sept. 23 that LDWF put landings at 934,367 pounds. That is 51,928 pounds, or 5.7 percent, over Louisiana’s 882,439-pound allocation.

The 2026 allocation already included a 52,148-pound payback for the 2025 overage. Without that payback, the private recreational allocation would have been 934,587 pounds.

Anglers had 109 open days. The weekly average was 49,177 pounds, nearly double the weekly average of the previous two years. Three weeks — 26, 27, and 30 — accounted for 50.7 percent of the allocation.

Secretary Tyler Bosworth said the department was glad to offer a few extended holiday weekends with higher bag limits, thanked offshore anglers who took part in LA Creel, and said the department is looking ahead to 2027. This is the season-total estimate, separate from the Labor Day reopen brief already on the desk. Detailed landing tables are on LDWF’s red snapper page.
