Southeast Idaho plans more than 80,000 October rainbows, led by Shelley and Blackfoot

US FishingIdaho

Southeast Idaho has its own October trout sheet. Idaho Fish and Game posted it Thursday, Oct. 1, 2026, at 11:40 p.m. MDT: hatcheries in the Southeast Region will release more than 80,000 catchable rainbow trout this month. This is not the statewide highlights package or the Clearwater Region’s nearly 29,000-fish October list already on the desk.

The big plants are the Snake River at Shelley, 27,350 rainbows; Blackfoot Reservoir, 20,000; and Chesterfield Reservoir, 19,200. Smaller waters on the same summary: Edson Fichter Pond 2,000; Bear River in the Oneida Narrows below the dam 1,500; Crowthers Reservoir 1,100; Crystal Springs Pond near Springfield 1,000; and 500 each at Bannock Reservoir in Pocatello, Montpelier Rearing Pond, and the Bear River below Alexander Dam.

Every date is tentative. Fish and Game says stocking depends on river, lake, and pond conditions, angler safety, weather, and staffing. Check the Idaho Fishing Planner before you drive.
