Arkansas report: giant salvinia on Millwood, fish 'condos' for Blue Mountain

The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission's weekly fishing report for Oct. 29 opens at Blue Mountain Lake. The lake has been drawn down, and AGFC crews are building pallet fish attractors with tree limbs woven in, which the report calls "condos," to draw crappie once it refills. About 1,000 acres of exposed lakebed have also been seeded with Japanese millet. The attractors will be added to the AGFC Fish Attractors webpage.
On Millwood Lake, guide Mike Siefert reports that the invasive plant giant salvinia has been found in several spots along Little River, including near the White Cliffs campground and ramp and the entrance to Horseshoe oxbow. AGFC and the Corps of Engineers are spraying herbicide, pulling out hundreds of pounds of the plant and setting containment booms. Boaters are asked to drain bilges and livewells and rinse trailers.
Also in the report, anglers have through Saturday, Oct. 31, to fish Peckerwood Lake before it becomes a waterfowl rest area until February. Lakes Catherine and Hamilton start 3-foot winter drawdowns Nov. 1, and the fall rainbow trout stocking below Carpenter Dam is scheduled for Nov. 30. At Lake Overcup, Lamar Bunting and Gene Neumeier won the Oct. 24 Arkansas Crappie Trail event with five fish weighing 9.12 pounds.
