North Carolina delays Delayed Harvest trout stocking until November

North Carolina will not stock Delayed Harvest waters in October. Smoky Mountain News reported Sept. 30, citing the Wildlife Resources Commission, that the fall plants wait until November. This is that later update, separate from the Sept. 23 hatchery note already on the desk.

A hot summer, drought, and damage from Helene left lethal temperatures in hatchery inflows. Armstrong has lost about 70 percent of its trout since June. Armstrong is the primary hatchery now that Setzer closed in late 2025 for renovations. Setzer is not expected to reopen until the end of 2027. A try at buying fish from a private hatchery for the fall did not work out.

Delayed Harvest rules still run Oct. 1, 2026, through June 5, 2027: catch-and-release only, artificial lures with one single hook, and no natural bait. Access to stocking sites may not match the old map after Helene. Check the live schedule before you go.
