Leech Lake’s Oct. 1 report puts walleyes on rocks and points in 10 to 15 feet

US FishingMinnesota

Leech Lake’s first October sheet is a cooling-water report. The Leech Lake Tourism Bureau posted it Oct. 1, 2026, from Gill at Reed’s Sporting Goods in Walker. Walleyes are the lead: rocks and wind-driven points in 10 to 15 feet, with the Annex, Bear Island, and Goose Island still producing, and reed edges worth a look where perch are stacked. Jigs tipped with crawlers or minnows, and crankbaits, are the consistent baits. Gill’s note is to fish through midday. As the water cools, that midday lull fades and fall walleyes often feed all day.

October is written up as prime time for the lake’s biggest muskies. The report says fish are shifting onto a fall feed, so the baits get bigger: large rubber, bigger bucktails, and slow rolls. Weed edges and rock-to-sand transitions are the places named. Northern pike are called aggressive on windblown weed edges with spoons and spinnerbaits. Bass are on the thick green vegetation that is left.

Panfish are bunching up as weeds die back. Whatever green cabbage and sand grass remains in 6 to 9 feet is holding bluegills, and crappies are showing best in the evenings. This sheet is a local report from Walker, not the Minnesota DNR Lake Superior report already on the desk. Reed’s Sporting Goods is listed at (218) 547-1505.
