Kansas Oct. 1 urban channel catfish trucks hit Wichita-area lakes
Kansas urban channel catfish stocking has an Oct. 1 date on the board. The Department of Wildlife and Parks August–October schedule lists pounds, not fish counts. Fish are stocked within five days of the printed date. They average about three-quarters of a pound, and none are shorter than 12 inches. This is the warm-season urban catfish program, not the winter trout plants that start in November.
The Oct. 1 column includes Colwich City Lake at 100 pounds; Fort Riley’s 7-mile pond 115, Moon Lake 650, Brakenek Lake 240, and Pritchard Pond 500; Newton Sand Creek 150; Park City Chisholm Pointe Lake 100; Sedgwick County Horseshoe Lake 150, Kid’s Pond 40, and Vic’s Lake 250; Valley Center McLaughlin Lake 100; and Wichita Dillon’s Pond 100 and SP Pond #3 at 80. Derby’s Rainbow Valley Lake is 75 pounds on the same date.
Dates can move for weather or water quality. The page says more than 150,000 harvest-size channel catfish are stocked around urban areas each year. Check the live August–October table before you treat a cell as fish already in the lake.
