Alaska FishingAlaska

Southeast Alaska’s commercial salmon drift gillnet fleet has one section on the Week 40 card. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game advisory dated Sept. 24, 2026, opens Section 1-B from 12:01 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 27, through 12:00 noon Thursday, Oct. 1. Pearse and Portland Canals are closed north of the latitude of Akeku Point, 54°50.03′ N. Districts 6, 8, and 15 are closed. The emergency order is EO 1S7926. The next gillnet announcement is due Thursday, Oct. 1.

The same release carries preliminary harvest estimates for statistical Week 39, Sept. 20 through Sept. 26, compiled Sept. 24. The total is 6,405 salmon: 5,200 coho, 1,170 chum, 20 pink, 15 Chinook, and no sockeye. District 1 accounted for 3,700 of those fish — 3,000 coho and 700 chum — on 8 boats over 5 days. District 15 added 2,000 — 1,600 coho and 400 chum — on 18 boats over 3 days. District 6 added 705, including the week’s 15 Chinook, on 7 boats over 3 days.

Hatchery figures printed on the sheet: Nakat Inlet, 479,000 chum and 7,500 coho; Anita Bay, 13,000 coho. District 8 is listed as confidential. ADF&G reminded fishermen and processors that every salmon, including steelhead, kept for personal use and not sold still has to go on the fish ticket at delivery. Chinook taken in the commercial drift gillnet fisheries may be retained and sold. The contact on the announcement is Troy Thynes, Region I management coordinator, at (907) 772-3801.
